New Mexico State University's Alternative Licensure Residency Program is a competitive post-baccalaureate, graduate certificate approved by the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) as a licensure pathway designed to prepare qualified classroom teachers.
The NMSU Alternative Licensure Residency Program aims to recruit highly qualified individuals who have earned a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field and are eligible for a New Mexico alternative license pathway. We seek individuals who will have a positive impact on the social, cultural, emotional, and intellectual growth of children and youth with whom they will work throughout their career. Applicants must be able to collaborate with a mentor teacher throughout the 2024-2025 school year.
NMSU is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and educator. The application process includes two steps, the first is the successful completion of the application. During step two, eligible applicants will be invited to a 15-minute interview with a small committee via Zoom.
Alternative Licensure Residency Program Overview:
- The Alternative Licensure Residency program features online and in person courses set in a regular 16-week or mini-semester (8-week) course schedule, with university supervisors, and on-site mentor teachers to facilitate on-going field coaching and mentoring. Each resident accepted to the Alternative Licensure Residency program will obtain classroom experience as a resident student teacher by collaborating with a mentor teacher and will meet licensure requirements during the 2024-2025 school year. They will continue receiving mentorship from a district appointed mentor teacher during their first full year as a classroom teacher.
- ALP Residents will receive a stipend of $35,000 for the 2024-2025 school year, co-teaching experiences with a Level II or Level III mentor teacher, ongoing professional development opportunities, and more.
- Successful completion of the Alternative Licensure Residency Program, including passing all courses and meeting district evaluation reviews, will result in an interview for potential employment from the participating district.
- Residents agree to a minimum of 3 years of employment with their cooperating district as a licensed classroom teacher (contingent on positive district evaluations and completion of NMSU coursework).
- Residents may also choose to apply their earned credits towards a master's degree in the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration, and Leadership.
